New Media and Preschool Services In-Person

New media is everywhere and children are using it. This webinar will focus on real best practices of incorporating new media into preschool services. What are some specific apps that are age appropriate for preschoolers?; How much time should be devoted to using an iPad or other tablets in a preschool storytime?; What are the pros and cons of leading a digital-focused preschool storytime versus a traditional preschool storytime? i.e. Should you devote the last 10 minutes of your traditional storytime to sharing apps with children and parents OR spend 25 minutes in a "digital storytime" using mostly apps and ebooks instead of traditional books and activities; How can digital resources be incorporated into preschool outreach programming?

Learning Outcomes

Participants will know:

How to engage and train youth services staff to work with the new media in a storytime setting.

Participants will understand:

What kind of support they need (time, peer, and technology).

Participants will be able to:

Identify the issues, challenges, and benefits created when new media is introduced to storytime throughout a library system.

Department heads, library school students, all staff serving children and their caregivers.

Instructors

Claudia Haines supports kids, teens and families with dynamic programs and access to great media of all kinds as the Youth Services Librarian at the Homer Public Library (Alaska). She trains other librarians as media mentors and serves on both local and national committees that support families and literacy. She is the co-author of the Association for Library Service to Children's white paper on media mentorship and the book Becoming a Media Mentor: A Guide for Working with Children and Families. She blogs at www.nevershushed.com and has written for multiple other sources on the topic of media mentorship and literacy in the Digital Age.

Melissa Ronning is a librarian who works for institutions that promote the accessibility of digital resources to the entire community. The challenge is to keep up with emerging technologies and to understand when a new trend has a valuable application to the community you are serving.

As a library services clerk for the Huntington Beach Public Library, Laura Jenkins entertains and educates preschoolers and their families in storytimes, pop culture programs, and through reader advisory initiatives. Laura is passionate about infusing technology into traditional library programming and has fun surprising patrons with giant e-book readings and app play in the middle of otherwise traditional sessions. Laura is a first-year MLIS student at San Jose State University and geeks youth services, emerging technology, and visual literature.
